Castor oil, castor oil (lat. Oleum Ricini, Oleum Palmae Christi) is a vegetable oil obtained from the seeds of the perennial castor bean by cold pressing the oil and boiling it with water. This procedure allows to decompose toxic toxoalbumin – ricin, the presence of which in the seeds means that their ingestion can cause fatal poisoning. The main (about 80%) component of castor oil is 18-carbon monoglyceride of ricinoleic acid. It also contains smaller amounts of glycerides of oleic, linoleic and other acids.
It is used in cosmetics as a conditioner for dry hair. It helps to restore brittle and falling eyebrows, eyelashes, nails and the epidermis around them. It is a common ingredient in so-called homemade conditioners.
It is used in medicine as a laxative. This effect is due to the ricinoleic acid it contains, which after being released (under the action of digestive enzymes) from glycerides, reacts with sodium ions (Na+) contained in the intestinal contents. This forms sodium soap of ricinoleic acid, which irritates the mucous membrane of the small intestine, stimulating its peristalsis. Castor oil is used in a dose of 1-2 tablespoons.
Note: Castor oil should not be used during pregnancy, as it can cause pregnancy complications and miscarriage.”
