To lower phosphate levels when serum phosphate levels are elevated during dialysis treatment. Active ingredients – 950 mg calcium diacetate. Excipients – croscarmellose sodium, castor oil, unrefined, hypromellose, carboxymethyl starch, sodium type A, orange flavor, sodium saccharin, magnesium stearate (vegetable), gelatin, 40.38 mg sucrose, corn starch, talc. The medicine is a mineral preparation that is used to bind phosphate contained in food. This reduces the amount of phosphate absorbed into the body. Calcium acetate is used to treat and prevent elevated phosphate levels in patients undergoing dialysis for severe kidney disease. The medicine should not be taken with elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) or if you are allergic to calcium acetate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. Always take this medicine exactly as described or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Recommended dose: Adults, unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, should start with taking 1 film-coated tablet three times a day. The dosage depends on the phosphate level in the blood. It should be checked regularly. If more calcium acetate is needed to lower the phosphate level, the dosage should be increased gradually. The usual dose is 1-2 film-coated tablets three times a day. The maximum dose of 6 tablets per day should not be exceeded. There are no data on the use of calcium acetate in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Therefore, the use of calcium acetate cannot be recommended for these patients. Treatment with calcium acetate is a long-term therapy and requires regular medical supervision. An overdose of calcium can lead to an increase in its concentration in the blood (hypercalcemia) and tissue calcification. If you accidentally take too many tablets, consult a doctor immediately. Overdose symptoms may include muscle weakness, abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, extreme thirst, abnormal heart rhythms, and loss of consciousness. If you forget to take it, do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose. Side effects – Severe hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood) may occur. Symptoms include: impaired consciousness such as drowsiness, confusion, and dizziness, and in extreme cases, coma, as well as decreased kidney function. Severe hypercalcemia is accompanied by increased thirst, frequent urination, abnormal heart rhythms, and calcium deposits in the kidneys. Long-term treatment with high doses of calcium acetate is associated with hypercalcemia and extraosseous calcifications (calcium deposits outside the bones), namely in the heart valves and blood vessels in front of the blood vessels and in the tissues, as well as with calciphylaxis (calcification of the walls of blood vessels and subcutaneous fat with possible consequences of loss of function, inflammation and necrosis of the affected vessels and tissues). To avoid these problems, it is recommended to keep the dosage of calcium acetate as low as possible and adjust it according to the levels of calcium and phosphate in the serum. Mild hypercalcemia (increased calcium levels in the blood) may occur. Signs of this are muscle weakness and abdominal pain. Belching, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea may also occur. The risk of increased calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) increases with concomitant use of vitamin D-containing products. Therefore, concomitant use of calcium and vitamin D containing drugs should be done under medical supervision. If you are taking certain drugs to treat heart disease (cardiac glycosides) at the same time as calcium acetate, you should have regular ECG examinations and additional calcium level checks. Before taking calcium containing drugs to treat increased stomach acidity (antacids), you should consult your doctor to avoid additional calcium exposure.
