Progestogel (Progesteron) is a physiological progestagen gel used to treat pre-menstrual mastodynia (breast pain and tenderness). It works by increasing the concentration of progesterone in the tissue of the breasts. When applied topically, it is absorbed through the skin and acts directly on the breasts. By triggering the blockade of oestrogen receptors, it helps to bring about better absorption of the fluid from the tissues, leading to a reduction in milk duct compression. In addition to this, it can also help trigger the production of certain enzymes which help to oxidize oestradiol into a less active form. This reduces some of the effects that oestrogen has on breast tissues. Application of this gel therefore helps to reduce the intensity and severity of mastalgia and breast pain.
