“The causes of vitamin B12 deficiency are numerous: common causes are unfavorable eating habits (e.g. fast food and processed foods), malabsorption in old age, a strict vegetarian diet or certain intestinal diseases. In severe malabsorption, such as gastritis or small bowel removal, Crohn’s disease, diverticulosis and the so-called blind loop syndrome, there is a gradual decrease in vitamin B12 reserves in the liver, which can develop into an overt vitamin B12 deficiency. With existing vitamin B12 deficiency, the hematopoietic tissues are primarily affected – this can lead to pernicious anemia. Later, the central and peripheral nervous system is also affected, since vitamin B12 is jointly responsible for the formation of the myelin sheaths of nerve cells. The consequences can be mental disorders or diseases of the spinal cord, which are manifested by paralysis and weakening of muscle tone. Often, mood deteriorates in the sense of depressive mood. Some drugs, such as neomycin or colchicine, proton pump inhibitors, diuretics and oral contraceptives can also lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Hydroxocobalamin is a physiological depot form of vitamin B12.
