• The medicine contains the active ingredient finasteride.
• It is intended for the treatment of men only.
• The medicine is used to treat male pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia) in men aged 18 to 41 years. If you have any questions about male pattern hair loss after reading this leaflet, ask your doctor.
• Male pattern baldness is common and is thought to be caused by a combination of heredity and a certain hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT contributes to a shortening of the hair growth phase and thinning of the hair.
• In the scalp, the drug specifically lowers DHT levels by inhibiting an enzyme (type II 5-alpha reductase) that converts testosterone to DHT. Only men with mild to moderate hair loss, not complete hair loss, can expect improvement from treatment with the drug. In most men who were treated with the drug for 5 years, the progression of hair loss was slowed and in at least half of these men, hair growth improved.
