What is CYMEVAN?

CYMEVAN contains the active substance ganciclovir. It belongs to a group called antiviral drugs.

What is CYMEVAN used for?

CYMEVAN is used to treat diseases caused by a virus called cytomegalovirus (CMV) in adult and adolescent patients aged 12 years and older who have a weakened immune system. It is also used to prevent CMV infection after an organ transplant or during chemotherapy in adults and children from birth.

· The virus can reach any part of the body. It can thus reach the retina at the back of the eye, which means that it can cause vision problems.

· The virus can affect anyone, but it is a particular problem for people with weakened immune systems. In these people, the CMV virus can cause serious illness. A weakened immune system may be due to other illnesses (such as AIDS) or medications (such as chemotherapy or immunosuppressants).

Never use CYMEVAN 500 mg powder for concentrate for solution for infusion:

if you are allergic to ganciclovir, valganciclovir or any of the other ingredients of this medication (listed in section 6).

if you are breastfeeding (see sub-section “Breastfeeding”).

Do not use CYMEVAN if any of the above applies to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using CYMEVAN.

Warnings and Precautions

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using CYMEVAN:

if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, penciclovir or famciclovir – these are other medicines used for viral infections.

if your white blood cell, red blood cell or platelet count is low – your doctor will do blood tests before you start your treatment and during your treatment.

if medicines have caused abnormalities in the number of your blood cells in the past.

if you have kidney problems – your doctor will need to prescribe a lower dose for you and will check your blood cell counts more often during treatment.

if you are being treated with radiotherapy.

wenn Sie allergisch gegen Aciclovir, Valaciclovir, Penciclovir oder Famciclovir sind – dies sind andere Arzneimittel, die bei Virusinfektionen angewendet werden.

wenn Ihre Anzahl an weißen Blutkörperchen, roten Blutkörperchen oder Blutplättchen niedrig ist – Ihr Arzt wird vor Beginn Ihrer Behandlung und während Ihrer Behandlung Blutuntersuchungen durchführen.

wenn Arzneimittel in der Vergangenheit Anomalien in der Anzahl Ihrer Blutkörperchen verursacht haben.
