Lactulosum Hasco syrup contains the active ingredient lactulose, which is a synthetic disaccharide that is absorbed to a very small extent from the digestive tract. Lactulose is broken down in the colon into lactic, formic and acetic acids and carbon dioxide. These acids reduce the pH in the colon from 7 to 5 – 5.5 and have a local osmotic effect, causing water retention in the colon. As a result, feces become thinner and larger, and intestinal motility is stimulated.
In patients with hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose reduces ammonia toxicity. The acids formed as a result of the breakdown of lactulose lower the pH and affect the conversion of ammonia into non-absorbable and non-toxic ammonium ions, which leads to their retention in the colon and a decrease in the concentration of ammonia in the blood.
