Utrozhestan contains the active ingredient progesterone – female sex hormone from the group of gestagens. Progesterone is secreted by the ovaries. It plays an important role in the regulation of the female menstrual cycle and the normal course of pregnancy. The structure of progesterone contained in Utrozhestan capsules corresponds to the physiological (natural) form of the hormone produced during the female cycle. A special, so-called micronized dosage form provides an extended action time.

Utrozhestan is used by physicians as an adjunct to treatment with estrogen, another type of female sex hormone, and in some cases of progesterone deficiency.

Depending on the treatment, Utrozhestan capsules are administered through the mouth (orally) or into the vagina (vaginally).

Oral administration

• In women with a preserved uterus as part of hormonal treatment for menopausal symptoms (natural or resulting from ovarian removal) as an adjunct to estrogen treatment. The combination of the two hormones reduces the increased risk of uterine cancer that occurs with estrogen monotherapy.
  Menopause symptoms primarily include hot flashes, sweating, palpitations, sleep disturbances and/or psychological complaints. , such as irritability and depressed mood.
  However, such treatment can only affect depressive conditions if they are directly related to hot flashes.
• Perimenopause (period before menopause; physical and mental complaints: see above).
• Premenstrual syndrome (physical and mental symptoms that occur a few days before the onset of menstruation).
• Irregular menstrual cycles, if it is proven that they are caused by hormonal disorders and not by pathological changes in the ovaries or uterus.

Vaginal insertion

• Menstrual irregularities and infertility due to proven progesterone deficiency as part of an assisted reproductive program after stimulation of egg maturation with other hormones (in vitro fertilization).
