- This medicine contains an active substance called finasteride, which belongs to a group of medicines called 5alpha-reductase inhibitors. It works by reducing the size of an enlarged prostate.
- Finasteride is used to:
- Treatment and control of benign (i.e. non-cancerous) enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia -BPH).
- Causes the enlarged prostate to shrink, improves urine flow and the discomfort caused by BPH, and reduces the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgical intervention.
