Amfepramone is used as supportive treatment in patients who are overweight and have a body mass index of at least 30 when weight loss measures such as diet and exercise alone have not been effective.
Body mass index is calculated by dividing body weight in kilograms by height in meters squared:
Body mass index (BMI) = body weight in kg/(body dimensions in m)2
So far, only short-term effectiveness in terms of weight loss has been demonstrated. The extent to which the active ingredient helps to prevent diseases associated with obesity has not been proven.

Amfepramon wird eingesetzt zur unterstützenden Behandlung von Patienten mit Übergewicht und einem Körper-Masse-Index von mindestens 30, wenn geeignete Maßnahmen zur Gewichtsabnahme wie Diät und Sport alleine nicht wirksam waren.
Der Körper-Masse-Index wird berechnet, indem man das Körpergewicht in Kilogramm durch die Körpergröße in Metern zum Quadrat teilt:

Bisher wurde lediglich eine kurzanhaltende Wirksamkeit im Hinblick auf eine Gewichtsverminderung nachgewiesen. Inwieweit der Wirkstoff Krankheiten zu vermeiden hilft, die mit Übergewicht in Verbindung stehen, ist nicht nachgewiesen.
