Indication

  This preparation contains metformin, a medicine from the group of so-called biguanides, which is used to treat diabetes.
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that ensures the absorption of glucose (sugar) from the blood into the body’s cells. There, the glucose is converted into energy or stored for later use.
If you have diabetes, your pancreas either does not produce enough insulin or your body tissues do not respond properly to the insulin it produces. This results in high blood sugar levels. This medicine helps to lower your blood sugar to as normal a level as possible.
In overweight adults, long-term use of the drug also helps reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. Stable body weight or moderate weight loss is observed under the drug.
It is used to treat patients with diabetes (type 2 diabetes, also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes) when blood sugar levels cannot be adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone. The medicine is used particularly in overweight patients.
Adults can use this medicine alone or with other medicines to lower blood sugar (medicines taken by mouth or insulin).
Children aged 10 years and over and adolescents can use the preparation alone or together with insulin.

Contraindication

  The medicine must not be taken
if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to metformin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
if you have liver problems.
if you have severe impairment of kidney function.
if you have uncontrolled diabetes, for example with severe hyperglycaemia (very high blood sugar), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis (see Risk of lactic acidosis in the Patient Information category) or ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a condition in which substances called ketone bodies build up in the blood, which can lead to a diabetic precoma. Symptoms include stomach pain, rapid and deep breathing, drowsiness or the development of an unusual fruity smell on the breath.
if you have lost too much body water (dehydration), for example due to prolonged or severe diarrhoea or if you have vomited several times in a row. This loss of fluid could lead to kidney problems, which puts you at risk of developing lactic acidosis.
if you have a serious infection, for example an infection of the lungs, bronchi or kidneys. Severe infections could lead to kidney problems, which puts you at risk of developing lactic acidosis.
if you are being treated for heart failure or have recently had a heart attack, have severe circulatory problems (such as shock) or difficulty breathing. This could lead to a lack of oxygen in the tissues, which puts you at risk of developing lactic acidosis.
if you drink a lot of alcohol.
If any of the above applies to you, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
Be sure to ask your doctor for advice,
if you need to undergo an X-ray or other imaging test in which
you will be injected with an iodine-containing contrast agent.
if you need to undergo major surgery.
You must stop taking this medicine for a certain period of time before and after the examination or operation. Your doctor will decide whether you need any other treatment during this time.

Dosing

  Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
This medicine cannot replace the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Continue to follow all dietary advice from your doctor and ensure regular physical exercise.
Recommended dose
Children from 10 years and teenagers
usually start with 500 mg or 850 mg once daily. The maximum dose is 2000 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. Treatment of children between 10 and 12 years of age is only recommended on the express advice of a doctor, as experience in this age group is limited.
Adult
usually start with 500 mg or 850 mg two or three times a day. The maximum dose is 3000 mg per day, divided into three doses.
If you have reduced kidney function, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose.
If you are also taking insulin, your doctor will tell you how to start taking the medicine.
surveillance
Your doctor will carry out regular blood sugar checks and adjust your dose according to your blood sugar level. Be sure to speak to your doctor regularly. This is especially important for children and adolescents or if you are elderly.
Your doctor will also check your kidney function at least once a year. If you are older or have reduced kidney function, more frequent tests may be necessary.
If after some time you have the impression that the effect is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
If you take more than you should
If you take more than you should, your blood may become too acidic with lactic acid (lactic acidosis). The symptoms of lactic acidosis are non-specific and include vomiting, abdominal pain with muscle cramps, a general feeling of being unwell with severe tiredness and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include low body temperature and low heart rate. If you experience any of these symptoms, you must seek medical help immediately as lactic acidosis can lead to coma. Stop taking the medicine immediately and contact a doctor or the nearest hospital.
If you forget to take it
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Take the next dose at the regular time.
