Indication

  The preparation is a blood sugar lowering medicine for oral use. It belongs to a group of blood sugar lowering medicines called sulfonylureas.
It works by stimulating the pancreas to secrete more insulin. The insulin then lowers your blood sugar level.
What is the preparation used for?
The medicine is used to treat a certain form of diabetes (type 2 diabetes mellitus) when diet, exercise and weight loss alone have not been enough to lower your blood sugar levels.

Contraindication

  The medicine must not be taken and your doctor must be informed
if you are allergic to: glimepiride or other sulphonylureas (medicines to lower your blood sugar, such as glibenclamide) or sulphonamides (medicines against bacterial infections, such as sulphamethoxazole) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
if you suffer from insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1 diabetes mellitus),
if diabetic ketoacidosis occurs (a severe metabolic disorder in diabetes with accumulation of acid in the blood and possibly some of the following symptoms: tiredness/exhaustion, nausea, frequent urination and muscle stiffness),
if you become unconscious as a result of severely increased blood sugar (diabetic coma),
if you suffer from severe kidney disease,
if you suffer from severe liver disease.
In these cases you must not take the medicine. If you are not sure whether this information applies to you, please contact your doctor or pharmacist before taking the preparation.

Dosing

  Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Amount to be taken
The dosage depends on your needs, your state of health and the results of your blood and urine sugar tests and is determined by your doctor. Do not take more tablets than your doctor has prescribed.
The usual starting dose is one tablet containing 1 mg glimepiride once daily.
If necessary, your doctor may increase the dose every 1 to 2 weeks of treatment.
The highest recommended dose is 6 mg glimepiride per day.
If necessary, combination treatment with glimepiride and metformin or with glimepiride and insulin can be started. In such a case, your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage of glimepiride, metformin or insulin for you individually.
  If you experience changes in your weight, lifestyle or are under stress, the dosage may need to be adjusted; therefore, consult your doctor.
If you feel that the effect of this medicine is too strong or too weak, do not change the dosage on your own, but always talk to your doctor.
If you take more than you should
If you take too much or an extra dose, you should immediately consume sufficient sugar (e.g. glucose tablets, sugar cubes, sweet fruit juice, sweetened tea) to avoid the risk of hypoglycemia and inform a doctor immediately. If children accidentally ingest the medicine, the amount of sugar given to treat hypoglycemia must be carefully controlled to avoid dangerous hyperglycemia developing. Unconscious patients must not be given any food or drink.
Because hypoglycemia may be long-lasting, careful monitoring of the patient is necessary until the danger is gone. Hospitalization may be necessary, also as a precautionary measure. Show the doctor the pack or any remaining tablets so that he or she knows immediately what you have taken.
Severe hypoglycemia with loss of consciousness and severe neurological symptoms are medical emergencies that require immediate medical treatment and hospitalization. It should be ensured that in the event of an emergency, a doctor is notified by pre-informed persons.
If you forget to take it
If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten dose, but continue taking your medicine as usual.
If you stop taking it
If you interrupt treatment or stop it prematurely, you must expect that the desired blood sugar-lowering effect will not occur or that your diabetes will worsen again. Take the medication for as long as your doctor has prescribed.
