Indication
The medicine is a modern, fast-acting insulin (insulin analogue). Modern insulin products are improved versions of human insulin.
It is used to reduce high blood sugar levels in adults, adolescents and children from 1 year of age with diabetes mellitus (diabetes). Diabetes is a disease in which your body does not produce enough insulin to control your blood sugar levels. Treatment with this medicine helps prevent long-term effects of your diabetes.
The medicine starts to lower your blood sugar about 10 – 20 minutes after you inject it. The maximum effect is reached 1 to 3 hours after the injection and the effect lasts for 3 – 5 hours. Due to this short action profile, the medicine should usually be administered in combination with medium- or long-acting insulin preparations. Furthermore, the preparation can be used for continuous infusion in a pump system.
Contraindication
The medicine must not be used
if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to insulin aspart or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
if you feel the first signs of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).
if the pen has been dropped, damaged or crushed.
if it has not been stored correctly or has been frozen.
if the insulin does not look clear and colorless.
If any of the above applies to you, do not use this medicine. Ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse for advice.
Dosing
Always use your insulin exactly as your doctor has told you and adjust your dose accordingly. Check with your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are not sure.
The medicine is generally given shortly before a meal. Eat a meal or snack containing carbohydrates within 10 minutes of the injection to avoid hypoglycaemia. If necessary, the medicine can also be given shortly after a meal.
Do not change your insulin without consulting your doctor. If your doctor has instructed you to change from one type or brand of insulin to another, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
Use in children and adolescents
In children and adolescents from 1 year of age, this preparation can be used instead of soluble human insulin when a rapid onset of action is preferred, for example when it is difficult to adjust the insulin dose according to mealtimes.
Use in special patient groups
If you have impaired renal or hepatic function or are over 65 years of age, your blood sugar level must be monitored more closely and a possible adjustment of your insulin dose to suit your individual needs must be discussed with your doctor.
If you have used more insulin than you should
If you inject too much insulin, your blood sugar will become too low (hypoglycemia).
If you forget to use your insulin
If you forget to use your insulin, your blood sugar may rise too high (hyperglycemia).
If you stop using your insulin
Do not stop your insulin therapy without consulting your doctor; he will tell you what to do. This could lead to very high blood sugar levels (severe hyperglycaemia) and ketoacidosis.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
